Conflicted – Friday Fictioneers

“Why did you go vegan?” he asked around a mouthful of burger.

Vegetarian,” she corrected. “Nothing with a face, but I still eat eggs and dairy.”

“So no fish, then.”

Sigh. “Right,” she replied. Fish have faces, too.

“But what about those big chicken farms – where hens are stuffed onto racks and forced to lay eggs, like, constantly?”

She mopped up her soft-boiled with a triangle of toast. Chicken Run came to mind.

“They’re alive, but they aren’t free! And poor factory cows, in those tiny milking stalls…”

Suddenly her toast was cardboard, and the café au lait tasted sour.
