Signs & Sigils – Friday Fictioneers

The autumn woods smelt of dead leaves, fungus and woodsmoke. The cottage was tiny, had seen better days, and huddled uncomfortably against crowding yews. She gripped the estate agent’s arm, shivering.

“You wanted a character property, and here’s one in spades!” the older man chuckled, too loudly in the gloom. “Not a day over eighty – a fixer-upper, as they say!”

A garlic braid in one broken window didn’t exactly enhance its curb appeal. That, and a ragged broom, propped on its handle by the peeling blue door.

Her face lit the darkness, and she squeezed harder. “I’ll take it.”
